Can STDs Be Transmitted During Pregnancy?

Most people are aware that sexually transmitted illnesses can be transmitted during sexual activity. However, sexual activity is not the only way STDs are transmitted. Fortunately, as a provider and promoter of Women’s Health in Florida, we will be more than delighted to share with you some of our knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases.

Bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the three main causes of STDs. These bacteria can easily spread from person to person via physical contact when engaging in any type of sexual activity.  If you’re wondering why you have an STD despite not engaging in any sexual activity, it could be from your mother.

STDs cannot be transmitted solely through sexual contact. A wide range of sexually transmitted illnesses can be passed on from a pregnant woman to her child before, during, or even after birth. HIV infection can cross the placenta during pregnancy. Some forms of STDs such as hepatitis B, genital herpes, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can be passed from the mother to the newborn through the birth canal.
